When picking your websites SEO keywords, its essential to asses the search intent of the keywords you pick. What kind of keywords or search terms are you looking at? What is the intent behind the keywords you checked? When picking SEO keywords you need to ask yourself these questions. Because Google has become very intelligent at determining and providing search results with the intent of people searching the keywords they put into the search bar.
So, here are the 4 different types of search intents. I have noticed google rank different kinds of websites and pages depending on the intent of the keyword.
1. Commercial Intent (Transaction Intent)
For keywords with words like “buy”, “sale” etc. Google tends to rank eCommerce website or online shops with shopping carts.
2. Informational Intent/Research Intent
Then there are information searching crowd using keywords with words like “best”, “reviews”, “what/how”. “top 10” etc. Google likes to rank blog posts, product review sites, how to guides etc for these type of searches. Increasingly google also like to show YouTube videos for these type of search keywords.
3. Navigational Intent
There are also brand searches with a brand or model or company name in it. For those google likes to show the company website results first.
4. News Intent
The people searching for news articles. For example if during a sports match going on between France and US and you are in US and search for that sport, Google will show news results first for that search terms.
5. General Intent
There are also general keyword searches for which its difficult to guess the intent. Example like the “pet container”. Why are you searching for it? To buy one? Do you want more info about it? Or looking for a company named “pet container”? So google provides a mix of all of these results in first page. These days Google also seems to increase share of news results and videos for General intent keywords.
When I do a search for “pet container” here in Sri lanka the first 3 results were from a company website called “www.petcontainers.lk”. 4th to 7th result was authoritative articles from Wikipedia and other sites about, “what are pet containers”, and “pet container recycling”. There were also news results and videos about pet containers from Youtube. These top results were followed by online shops with pet container sales pages.
