What Makes A Poor, Good Or Excellent Web Content Writer?

I hire content writers and I was looking for information about how to judge a content writer. Then I came across a good answer in the Quora forum about how to tell someone is a good technical writer. I found that answer is applicable somewhat web content writers I hire for my blogs too. Here’s how I think that categorization applies to web content writers.

Poor content writers, when given a topic or keyword to write about, simply do a quick Google search, grab some content from the top search result pages, rewrite it and leave it at that.

Good content writers,  do a little more in depth research, ask themselves constantly if they fully understand the content and don’t just assume “the audience will know,” and focus on presenting the information in a logical flow.

Excellent content writers, go a step further and act like investigative journalists. They strive to, “get the story” by figuring out what the content is about, and how the details, features or product is solving the readers problem. They constantly ask and answer the question “why?” and include plenty of links/cross-references to concepts and related topics instead of assuming the reader is already familiar with everything. They anticipate the questions that users will ask when they follow the material.

Whereas a normal content writer may write up the topic details and features and what all the options are, the excellent writer will give a good overview of what the topic/product is, describe its features and details and how it solves or is advantages to you and how to get the best out of it.

Excellent writers also wear the hat of User Advocate, giving the topic suggestions and insight to make the features and options more intuitive and write about negative aspects whenever they encounter issues and file how to overcome them.

Obviously an excellent writer’s work will take more time, effort, and creative thinking. But they are much in demand, better paid, get more long term work, enjoy the writing process, and have a rewarding and big impact on the reader. They’re excellent web content is a source of pride for them and whoever hires them. And their readers reread there content, share it and bookmark it.

Being a excellent writer is very rewarding and fulfilling road few writers are ready to take.
